Denise 1Rarely does a major talent come out of nowhere. Denise Kirkland has been on the scene for years and is just now making a real effort to get to be well-known. The chantruese may ge her wish.....she is that good.

She grew up not being able to sing. Her whole family was musical and could sing and play the piano. Denise could do neither. She still can’t play the piano despite 6 years of lessons. But since her lat twenties boy can she sing.

While she spent most of her adult life singing jazz in nightclubs, restaurants and private functions she realized she could use her deep, smoky vocals for good and switched to the blues.

Her musical influences include tons of the usual suspects that could fill an ocean, including but not limited to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Etta James, Carmen McCrae, Koko Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis.

Kirkland has never let grass grow under her feet; she grew up in both Severna Park, MD and Florence, SC. In 2006, she moved from Philadelphia to Atlanta where she sings mostly  in blues clubs these days belting out tunes in the venue likes of Fat Matt’s and Two Urban Licks.

She also writes songs and has written the originals for her debut CD, now in production. She writes jazz, blues, R&B, Southern Soul, gospel and country songs for herself and other artists.

Denise says, “No matter what your obstacles, you have the will or can learn the skills necessary to create your own beautiful quality of life.” Her motto? “I ain’t braggin’, I’m confessin’!”
